Skott is a Swedish alternative/pop singer. Skott has headlined tours in both Europe and the US, a global takeover that stands in stark contrast to the small wooded Swedish village of Vikarbyn where Skott grew up, known for its traditional customs and own language.
However, it is this unique way of life and upbringing that has enabled Skott to truly walk her own path and create a world entirely of her own. In the delicate process of writing and recording her debut album, Skott searched for a way to release new music without having to compromise on her creative vision. When the opportunity presented itself, she started her own record label, ‘Dollar Menu’.
What inspires your writing? Do you draw inspiration from poems, music, TV, or other media?
I usually write from what I’m feeling deep inside, but I was looking more outward for inspiration with my new EP “A Letter From the Universe”. Soaking in video games I enjoy, moments in films or tv, and other external inspiration. I fed off of this imagery, which kind of amplified the drama I was feeling inside when I wrote certain melodies or songs on the EP. It’s a different approach to songwriting for me, and I had fun with it.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
I don’t have a go-to formula, but some advice I have is to mix up your environment or change your surroundings. Just being in a different space or setting can affect your mindset and open up for new perspectives. It’s not always that simple of course, but I feel it’s a decent first step at least. And don’t be afraid to try something new. It may not be the answer, but it can lead to seeing things in a different light, which could in turn lead to fresh ideas.
Where have you performed? What are your favourite venues?
My most memorable show was probably the Vive Latino festival in Mexico City, where due to last minute covid travel restrictions, my entire band, manager, and sound technician couldn’t fly in for the show. And I learned this the day before going on stage. So, we actually got my band to record their live parts and send the files to us, where we put together a spontaneous show in the hotel room the night before. My visuals guy had to take over all the audio, and we ended up pulling it off. The crowd there was incredible, they were so supportive even though I showed up without any band or my usual setup. I’ll never forget their amazing energy, and while I’d never want to be in that situation again, it’s now a moment I can look back on and smile about.
What is your favourite song to perform?
“Glitter and Gloss” is one I have a lot of fun doing live. The song has pretty intense parts to it, and I feed off the audience’s energy, and we get to share these energetic moments together. And when I’ve brought my visual setup along for a show, this song one of the crazier ones to see, so that also adds to the experience.
Are you planning any videos for your music?
I’m really into directing and art directing my videos and can’t wait to share “Rule The World” with you. It taps into my sci-fi and abstract side, and involves a bellydancing alien, among other things. I let loose on this one, but also wanted to keep it beautiful and atmospheric. It might be a bit cocky to say, but I’m really proud of my music videos and put a lot of heart into each one. I also read all the YouTube comments so I’m excited to see what you guys think of this one.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
“Multicat”, it’s Multi-Love by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, but with my own lyrics about a cat. And I’m pretty sure the lyrics are always changing.
Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?
Dinosaurs because they’re actually the epic combination of science and myth. They were real, and at the same time they trigger your imagination like any magical fairytale creature. How cool is that?
If you had to describe yourself as a flavour, what would it be?
My family’s crazy about brewing, and we actually brew beers inspired by my songs. What does the music taste like? It’s a fun challenge, I think we’ve brewed at least 13 different songs now. So, I’m going to answer with a beer flavor here, and I’d say I’m a lambic. Which is this technique that lets wild yeast run free and it’s a bit fresh, a bit sour, and a bit unpredictable. Or some kind of dark stout with undertones of liquorice and chocolate.
What’s your favourite board game?
Catan’s probably my favourite at the moment. One time we hiked to my uncle’s cabin in the woods, where there’s no electricity or running water, and played for hours by candlelight. We grilled our dinner over a wood fire while the forest got pitch black outside, it felt like the perfect way to experience a board game about settlers exploring new lands.
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
Well, it doesn’t really need to be cooked, but right now I’m into “tofu Skagen”. It’s the veggie version of a popular Swedish seafood dish, it might sound kind of weird but it’s creamy and smokey and delicious when spread on a nice piece of toast.
On January 21st, 2022 Skott released the EP A Letter From The Universe. The EP follows Skott’s debut album ‘Always Live For Always’ released in 2020. Tracks from the album were supported by the likes of BBC Radio 1, The Times, Billboard, NME, The Line Of Best Fit, Pigeons & Planes, Earmilk, Idolator, Refinery 29 and PAPER Magazine to name but a few.
