London alt pop duo Cherryade have released ‘Scream’, a lockdown cabin fever anthem giving a voice to a failed nation. Written about mental health and financial struggles during lockdown, the song also channels Ella and Alex’s own frustration at the UK government’s handling of the pandemic. Mixing rap with punk and rave elements, the loud and bashful track draws inspiration from the likes of Peaches, slowthai and The Prodigy and pushes the duo’s genre bending sound to a new extreme.

Taken from their upcoming self-produced mixtape ‘Ugly Truth, Vol. 1’, due in April,  the project tackles a mix of emotions and themes faced during the pandemic, ranging from loneliness to sex, fast food culture to Trump, and the impacts of social media on mental health. ‘Scream’ follows on from last year’s releases ‘Fast Food’ and ‘Only Fan / Sick!’ which have had a string of support from Spotify (misfits 2.0, SALT, Fresh Finds & more), BBC Radio 1, 6Music, Wonderland, American Songwriter, LADYGUNN & more, as well as recent syncs with MTV’s Teen Mom OG & Teen Mom 2.

Speaking on the new single, Alex says: “Scream was written as a reflection of people struggling to cope in the last year due to COVID. We saw friends and family lose their jobs and really struggle financially and mentally without having an outlet to vent, so we wanted to try to capture the frustration of it all whilst disguising it as a fun rave track. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to it, both in the UK and globally”.

Ella continues: “It’s a tongue in cheek song, but we really channeled our own personal frustration into it as well, especially at how badly everything has been handled by Boris and the UK government. How is it possible that it’s been a year but there’s still no significant financial support for the self employed? Why do we have one of the highest death counts in the world for such a small population? We should really be holding these people accountable for what’s going on”.

Unafraid of tackling political and social issues head on in their lyrics, Cherryade have received a landslide of support from TIME Magazine, Billboard Pride, The Guardian, The Line Of Best Fit, CLASH, MTV, Refinery29 and more, and their upcoming mixtape‘Ugly Truth, Vol. 1’ sets to solidify them further as DIY one’s to watch.
