Innovative South African producer, artist, and songwriter Cubbi has released his anticiapted debut EP ‘nothingspecial.’ The 6-track EP includes 4 previous singles, “Rippling,” “GTFO,” “Buzzkill” & “White Lies Like Flies,” as well as two previously unheard tracks: “Lose A Love” & “Fall Out Boy.”
Cubbi is a master of combining textured melodies with fresh, inventive beats. His sound is a fresh take on electronic music, drawing influences from across genre lines. The ‘nothingspecial‘ EP is an exquisite introduction to Cubbi as he allows listeners to step inside his psyche. Throughout the EP Cubbidocuments the past few years of his life – the good, the bad and the ugly. He calls this EP a “modern reflection on interpersonal relationships” and plunges into heart-wrenching topics such as sexual identity, broken relationships, addiction, and mental illness. His electro-flavored beats layered with emotive lyricism offers a raw and intimate look into life that many may find refuge in.

1. Lose A Love
“This song’s demo took about 20 minutes to write and record. I feel like some songs just flood into me sometimes, as if they come from somewhere else almost. This song was definitely one of those.”
2. GTFO
“I was going through a rather dark time and I didn’t know how to handle it, so I was self medicating and doing a lot of drugs and drinking a lot. The first half of the song was written in that state of mind so it really came from a very honest and raw place… It’s funny because it wasn’t until I went to rehab months later until I was able to finishing writing the song.”
3. Fall Out Boy
“I did ‘Fall Out Boy’ with my friend Bubele Booi from Nobel… The first line of the lyrics were “It’s been a slow summer”, which was so fitting to how I felt at the time – I was working 2 jobs serving food, one at a market selling soup and another at some pretentious steakhouse and I was very over trying to make enough for bills etc.”
4. Buzzkill
“‘Buzzkill’ started as a song about my current boss at the time that I really hated. She would always find a way to kill the energy in the room. I actually forgot about the song until I landed in the studio with Robokid.”
5. Rippling
“…it is a love song, but one to mental illness.”
6. White Lies, Like Flies
“This is the most introspective song on the EP. It’s also about my first long term relationship which ended because of cheating. Eventually all of the lies caught up with them, I found it and it broke me.”
