Cody Renee Cameron made her big screen debut playing a corpse in a disturbing necromancy scene with Jena Malone in the cult classic, The Neon Demon, directed by Nicolas Refn.
After a series of roles where she ends up murdered, the New York Weekly coined Cody as the “best damn dead girl in Hollywood.” Since then, she’s breathed more life into her roles, most recently as a recurring on the FX drama, The Mayan’s M.C. where if you watch the show, you know survival is impressive! Cody also survived the cutting room floor as one of the only female’s casts in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. Keep an eye out for this rising star in Hollywood, not just on the TV, but also whizzing by you on her motorcycle on the boulevard!
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you do what you do?
Howdy! I’m Cody Renee Cameron, and I’m your average girl next door motorcycle riding model actress! You might know me from the last season of Mayans M.C. or from performing on stage at the world-famous Comedy Store or from that Playboy Magazine your dad hides under the mattress! I love entertaining people and making people laugh, so that’s what I came to Hollywood to do!
What is a typical day like for you?
Wake up. Race to take my senior dog, Cheetoh, outside before she pees in the house. Peruse the internet for a bit. Then BAM, who knows?! This morning I threw on my chaps and cruised Sunset BLVD over to my agent’s office to chat about some rebranding for the new year, and then I had coffee on the strip. I usually spend a lot of time working on auditions; I’m constantly taking acting classes or training for stunts. I just did a supermoto school a couple of weeks ago that I’m now hooked on! And then, when I’m lucky, I’m on set working as an actor or stunt performer. I also spend a ton of time creating digital content for all social media platforms.
When you are filming, what do you make sure to do to take care of yourself?
I start the morning with an entire cup of water. Sounds so simple, but this is a challenge for me. Haha. It really sets me up to consume healthy snacks and beverages on set. It makes a world of difference because we often work at least 12-hour days! And it’s even more important when I’m doing jobs involving stunts. I was once working a motorcycle riding job in Santa Clarita in like 100-degree heat in all leathers and dropped my bike on a dusty turn due to pure exhaustion.
Do you have a quote or motto that you apply to your work and or your life?
I have a couple, but my current fav is “I’m here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I’m all out of bubblegum.” It’s not about actual violence, though to me, it’s about seizing the moment each day! I feel so lucky to be here, and I just want to make the most of it!
What do you typically focus most on in regard to your career?
That’s a great question, and honestly, I constantly have to recalculate and refocus. Ultimately, I’d love to be a lead in a show about chick motorcycle riders. How fun does that sound?! But it’s easy for me to focus on digital content creating because I can do that from anywhere! Last year, I went to Morocco and was able to create amazing photos and videos of surfing in the desert and riding camels by the ocean, and that’s all incredible! But after a while, I have to ask myself, does this get me closer to the mountain (aka my goal) right now? The goal is to slay the TV acting game. So, I’m focusing less on things that might be fun or make me money and more on putting in the work to book that game-changing lead role in a tv show.
Do you have any inspirational sources that help you generate new ideas?
Heck yea. Jumping on my Harley and going for a cruise. Especially like PCH by the ocean or cruising the mountains. That fresh air mixed with a little adrenaline always clears my mind and gives me inspiration!
What is important for you to relay through your projects?
Freedom. I want people to feel less trapped by their worries or what society says they’re supposed to do or feel. I want people to feel inspired, happy, and good. I try really hard to show that in my life and hope it speaks through my art. It’s such a little thing, but when I post glamorous stuff on Instagram, I try to always show the other side, like how eating 49-cent mac n cheese with no makeup on while cuddled up with your dogs is also cool. Like, I think showing vulnerability, and a positive attitude is everything.
Tell us about your experience in the film/television industry so far… do you have any advice for people going into this industry?
DONT DO IT! Haha, just kidding. Be prepared for a super challenging journey. You really have to work on yourself and your own spirit as much as you have to work on the technique of acting or music or whatever field you choose. You have to show vulnerability in the art but then skin as thick as dinosaurs when it comes to the business side. You gotta be empathetic and hard all at the same time. You have to need nothing. You have to come to the table offering your gift, and if people don’t want them, you have to be just as fine with saving them for next time. I’ve learned so much about myself and the industry in the last 11 years living in LA, and I swear I learn something new every day. The more I learn, the more I find out that I don’t know. But you just have to trust the process and also not be afraid to think outside the box. The best advice I have in starting is to just start. Pick up the pen or camera or whatever, and DO, and don’t judge. Also, jump into a class, whether it’s online or in person, for something you’re passionate about. There’s a class out there for everything, and that’s the first step in meeting your tribe.
What projects are you working on now?
I’m currently working on Mayans M.C. season 5. I have a movie called The 12 Slays of Christmas coming out this week and Mutilator 2 coming out next year.
