Gary is a Juno nominated recording artist who continues to breathe passion into his music. Born and raised in Cherry Brook, a small predominately Black community in the province of Nova Scotia, Gary first fell in love with music growing up in the church.

From singing in the church choir to growing up listening to classic soul artists such as Al Green, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. Being captivated by music legends, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson, is what influenced Gary’s soulful/R&B sound.

What first got you into music?

My childhood was filled with the soulful sounds of classic artists, thanks to my parents, and my older brothers introduced me to their favorite pop and R&B records. At just 7 years old, I sang in front of an audience at church, igniting my passion for music. It was at that moment that I first realized the gift I possessed—the gift of song. My deep passion for music led me to “Canadian Idol,” where I placed 2nd in the first season, propelling my music career. Since then, I’ve released four albums, including my latest, “The Melody Within,” in October. Music has been a lifelong journey, shaped by my roots and opportunities that have come my way. I’m blessed that the melody of music still lies within!

What is your favorite song to perform?

Lately, my go-to song for singing has been one of the singles from my latest album, titled “How Do I Say (I Love You).” Whether I perform it acoustically with just keys or alongside a band, there’s a profound sense of ease when I sing it. This song is a heartfelt expression of pure passion and love. My ultimate dream is to have the opportunity to sing it one day with a full orchestra, adding another layer of depth and emotion to the song.

How would you describe your music?

My music are heartfelt expressions, deeply rooted in soul, and delivered straight from the core of my being. I have a passion for infusing R&B and soul compositions with emotional depth, with the intention of forging a connection with my listeners on a deeper level. My songs delve into personal experiences and relationships, exploring themes of reflection, introspection, love, joy, and self-empowerment. I take pride in merging contemporary elements with the timeless essence of R&B and soul, resulting in a distinctive, modern, and emotionally charged sound that resonates with authenticity and soulful depth.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

I greatly admire a diverse array of artists. This list includes iconic figures such as Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Adele, and Sam Smith who have left a remarkable impact on the music industry with their extraordinary talent and artistry. Legends like Otis Redding, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight have set the standard for soulful and powerful performances. John Legend, Jon Batiste, Beyoncé, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye inspire me with their exceptional musicality and passion. This is just a glimpse into the many artists I hold in high regard for their contributions to the world of music.

What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?

I would be traveling more. I love to travel! Traveling allows me to explore new places, cultures, and experiences. It’s a wonderful way to broaden my horizons, gain new perspectives, and create lasting memories. If music weren’t my career path and if I weren’t investing into my music career, I’d be embarking on more adventures filled with exploration and discovery.

What makes you nostalgic?

Music holds a unique power to evoke memories and emotions for me. Specific songs have the ability to transport me to distinct moments and places in time. It might be a family gathering filled with cherished moments, a journey to a far-off destination, or other experiences that have left a significant footprint. I find melodies and lyrics serve as a time machine, bringing back those treasured memories.

If you could learn any language fluently, what would it be?

If there’s any language I could learn fluently, it would be Spanish. What captivates me about Spanish is not only its practicality, being one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, but also the sheer beauty of its sound. I love the rhythmic cadence and the expressiveness in the way it rolls off the tongue. Spanish feels like a language that dances, and to me carries a warmth and passion.

What is your favorite board game?

Without a doubt, Monopoly is my favorite. It’s a game that my cousins and I used to play often when we were younger, and even now, whenever we reunite, it’s the game of choice. It’s not just fun and competitive, but it continues to create lasting memories with both family and friends.

Do you shout out the answers at the TV whilst watching quiz shows?

You bet I do! I enjoy watching quiz shows and often get enthusiastic about answering questions. It can be a fun and engaging way to test my knowledge, and when friends and family join in, the competitive spirit comes alive.

If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?

If I could advise my younger self, I’d stress the importance of lifelong learning, resilience, and the value of meaningful relationships. Following one’s passions and embracing challenges is key, as is practicing self-compassion and setting clear goals. Physical and mental health, responsible money management, and being present at the moment would be core principles. Lastly, I’d emphasize the significance of making a positive impact and living authentically. The central message is to embrace self-discovery and growth with an open heart and mind.
