Zaher Saleh was born in Lebanon to Palestinian n refugees and raised in Canfield, Ohio, where he spent his summers as a teen, eventually attending high school and college there. Zaher appeared on the Arab version of the hugely popular music talent content “Star Academy”. Zaher’s work serves to unite us across cultural, and religious, barriers by touching on what it is to be human.
Who inspired you to make music?
Growing up, I was inspired by everything pop. I was such a fan of the 2000s and still am; it brings so much nostalgia! But later on, I would say, it was my journey of growth and self-reflection along with the coming to terms with my identity. Those were the most significant motivators and constant inspirations for my work.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
It helped bring more diversity to the mainstream. I remember watching Ricky Martin as a kid and being excited because I felt that I could see myself in him; he looked like he could be an Arab! So it indirectly gave me hope.
Fast-forward to 2022, I see exceptional coverage of artists from all over the world, including the Middle East! Of course, we still have ways to go, but it’s very promising to see that someone like me is getting a chance to be seen and heard!
Have you got a ritual of sorts when making music?
I usually compose my melodies using pre existing instrumentals. Then, after I have a basic song structure, I take it to my producers, and we work together to bring the vision to life.
I used to get so frustrated, though. I used to get so disappointed with my vocal takes at studios, no matter how big or fancy they were. They could never stand up to the demos I recorded on my own mic at home. This brought so much frustration and, at times, pushed me to quit working on a track. I’ve since stopped recording at studios and reverted to using my Zoom H6 mic instead (which isn’t really made for that, by the way), and I’ve never been happier!
How would you describe your music?
Whenever I describe the vibe of any track to Ethan Conway, my talented producer, I use terms like “ethereal” and “something that takes you to another world.” And that’s precisely how I’d love people to experience my music: to be taken and transported to another world.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on two new tracks at the moment, both in Arabic. And for the past 4 years, I’ve been writing my first feature film. It is a psychological thriller that critiques the traditional power structures with themes that speak to the future of social minorities in the Arabic world, ultimately calling for the acceptance of self-love.
What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?
Such a difficult question! I recently discovered this incredibly talented Kuwaiti Dj and performer, her name is Fatima Al Qadiri. I have a song on repeat, it’s hauntingly beautiful, “Malaak” which translates to angel.
What was the last series you watched on TV?
Succession! My god! It was a brilliantly written, directed, and executed show! Sadly, it highlights the dark side of human beings… But it reinforced what exactly I DON’T want to end up like, so that’s good 🙂
What do you see as the greatest invention?
The Internet! It has changed the course of humanity and impacted literally all aspects of our lives. But it also constantly expands and evolves, at times in frightening ways.
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
Yes! I tend to see 11:11 often. I like to think that it’s a reminder from the universe to practice content and gratitude. And also, to make a wish or two 🙂

Love this! Hmmm, I would say pistachio 🙂 Just because it’s my ultimate favourite ice cream flavour. Ever.
