Zeeteah has had a No. 1 dance hit in America, starred in an award-winning musical, and performed alongside some of the greatest stars of our time. Her music is a unique blend of reggae, dancehall, jazz and soul.
What first got you into music?
My mother says that I told her when I was five that I was going to be a singer, and I don’t think I’ve ever really considered any other career. I was a soloist in church as a child and sang on reggae records in my teens. I had a series of secretarial jobs but devoted myself to music full time as soon as it started paying the rent. It’s what I was born to do.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
I make music with my husband and creative partner Paul Caplin, and our musical style is constantly evolving. Over the last few years, we made a journey from a blend of jazz and reggae to more Dancehall influenced material and more recently to Afrobeats which we both love in which we are hugely enjoying exploring.
Where have you performed?
I’m lucky enough to have collaborated with some amazing artists, and in the process, I have performed in some great venues. I particularly remember a few highlights singing with Tom Jones at Party In The Park; With Eikichi Yazawa in Japan at The Budokan and with the late Johnny Hallyday in Paris at Bercy and Le Parc des Princes.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
When Paul and I were getting started in music way back in the 80s, the only way anyone would ever hear your music was if you were signed by a record company that could manufacture and distribute it for you. The Internet has completely changed that, of course, and now, with a few taps on a keyboard, you can send your brand-new track around the world at a very low cost. As a result, the world is experiencing a tidal wave of new music by enthusiastic wannabe stars. It’s great that so many people are being so creative. But there are now more than 100,000 new releases on Spotify alone every single day. As a result, only artists with a combination of exceptional music and expert marketing can hope to be heard above the noise. So as well as bringing creative freedom, the Internet has brought disappointment to the many, many musicians who are unable to get their music heard.
What is next for you?
We are working on a new collection of songs strongly influenced by Dancehall, Soca, and Afrobeats. We’re also working with new collaborators, both in production and in performance. It’s an exciting time, and we are really enjoying where it’s taking us. The first single from the new album is entitled Sistas and will be released on 12 May.
If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?
As I mentioned, the album we’re working on at the moment is heavily influenced by Afrobeats, and a lot of what we’re listening to at the moment comes from that truly inspiring genre. Our current favorites are Wizkid (of course), Davido, Kizz Daniel, and Ayra Starr.
You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?
Yellow. The color of sunshine.
What would be a good theme song for your life?
Honestly, it’s a toss up between “I’m A Woman” and “This Is My Life”. But “Get This Party Started” would probably be in there too.
What was the last TV series you watched on TV?
We’re in the middle of watching the final season of “Succession”. It’s great.
What was the last thing you dressed up as for fancy dress?
I wear a fancy dress every time I go on stage. I always dress up as me.
Tell us what your ideal partner might look like if you could order one from ‘Partners R Us’.
I’m looking at him right now. Paul and I have been together for twelve and a half years and it’s been an amazing ride.
