Abbey Anderson, who is only 16 years old, is just at the beginning of her journey into the world of pop music.
By the time she was six years old, Abbey had already begun her adventure in the world of competitive dance. Abbey is originally from Burlington, Ontario, and she has always had a strong passion for performing. She has always found it satisfying to captivate audiences, whether it be in front of her family, her friends, or on stage. She has a passion for both performing and performance.
Recently, Abbey’s passion for sharing stories inspired her to explore songwriting, leading her to write her first original song from the comfort of her bedroom. She created a voice that resonates with her generation by combining components of sincere lyrics and appealing melodies. She was inspired by musical superstars such as Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and Gracie Abrams, among others.
Recently, Abbey has been taking classes in both the piano and the voice, which has enabled her to strengthen her skills and her artistic voice. She secured a contract with The Singers Company to produce her debut song, which was produced by Roy Hamilton III, a veteran of the music industry. This dedication drew the attention of Roy Hamilton III. Abbey has been able to bring her musical visions to life thanks to Roy’s wonderful collaboration, which established the foundation for her to do so.
We anticipate that her debut single, “Dear Ex Lover,” released on February 7th, will mark a significant milestone in her developing career. Her adventure is only getting started, and it appears that this young artist has a bright future ahead of her. She is constantly creating new things and performing them, and she has an unquenchable passion for music and dance.
How do you connect to your fans, and what does their support mean to you?
I connect to my fans through my social media. I love posting videos about my music on either TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube, and I always love replying to messages from my supporters. It also allows me to show some of my personality to my fans, and I feel like that’s important. Having their support means the world to me and always inspires me to keep going and not give up! I want to keep producing music that they’ll love so that our fandom can keep growing, and I’m truly appreciative of their kindness and encouragement.
Can you tell us about your new song “Dear ex-lover” and what inspired it?
My latest single, “Dear Ex-Lover,” wasn’t written about one person in particular, as most people would probably expect. The song is about being in any type of relationship (friends, significant other, etc.) and knowing deep down in your heart that even though you love that person so much, at the end of the day, they’re not good for you. Some people just aren’t meant to be in our lives, no matter how much you want them to be. My single, “Dear Ex-Lover,” is all about the breaking and healing that comes with realizing that sometimes you aren’t the problem and you shouldn’t have to ever beg someone to love you.
How do you approach songwriting? And what does your creative process look like?
I approach songwriting with an open mind and open heart. My best songs are always written when I’m fully honest and allow myself to dig deep into whatever I’m feeling at that time. I love creating songs that I feel people can relate to, and I try to be an open book in terms of the songs I write. My creative process will usually look like me finding a quiet space (most times my bedroom) and writing in this little blue notebook I have. Sometimes an idea will come to me randomly throughout the day. However, most of the time, I usually start by writing down whatever comes to my mind, just certain words or phrases that really pop out in my brain. From there I start to add a bit more structure to my writing and eventually will go to my piano and find chords/melody that I think suit the song best. Once I feel good about what I have put together, I’ll head into the studio and get recording!!
What do you enjoy doing outside of music that helps inspire your creativity?
Something that I enjoy doing outside of music is dancing. I’ve been a competitive dancer since I was six years old, and I do all styles of dance. It’s honestly my favorite thing in the world, and I couldn’t imagine my life without dance. It has truly shaped me into the person I am today and has really helped me in terms of expanding my creativity. Dance allows me to connect deeper within myself and understand what I’m feeling. It has really helped me think outside of the box in terms of the way that I move and express myself, which in turn has allowed me to think outside the box with my music and songwriting. Dance has also helped me understand music more in terms of rhythm, pace, etc., which has helped me become a stronger artist!
Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they helped shape your sound?
My biggest musical influences are Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. Olivia is such an amazing performer, and the writing in her music is incredible. All of her music is so relatable, and it just makes me want to listen to it over and over again. She really inspires me to create music that’s real and raw and uses unique sounds that are interesting to listen to. Billie Eilish is also a huge inspiration to me. The way that she has connected to such a large audience is honestly incredible. She just seems like such a relatable and good-hearted person, which really inspires me to be open and honest when writing music and connecting to my audience. Her music is so unique and inspires me to think outside the box when creating music of my own.
How do you stay motivated and inspired in the competitive industry?
Being in the music industry is definitely not easy. A lot of the time it can feel like nothing is progressing or happening; however, I’ve learned to trust the process and understand that everything will fall into place exactly how it should. There are so many incredible artists out there trying to make it in this industry, and I know it can take years to reach any kind of success. Making it big in this industry is my biggest dream, and I know that if I keep working hard and stay positive and passionate, I can achieve whatever I put my mind to and make younger me so proud!!
What’s a fun fact about you that your fans might be surprised to learn?
One fun fact about me is that I am OBSESSED with Christmas and the Christmas season. It’s my absolute favourite holiday and makes me feel all warm and cozy inside. November 1st, everything starts in my house. I decorate my room, and my mom starts decorating the house, and the tree is up within those first few days. I start watching Christmas classics and rewatch them over and over, Hallmark movies, and I eat at least one candy cane a day for the whole season. I love doing Christmas baking with my family, going to look at Christmas lights, drinking hot cocoa, and so much more!
