If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?
If I could open for any artist it would without a doubt be Cage the Elephant.
They’ve been my all time favourite band for over 10 years now and their music is what really inspired me to make music for myself as opposed to making it for an audience. Their frontman, Matthew Shultz, is one of my biggest idols when it comes to music and performance art. He is the most incredible performer, I’ve seen them 8 times now, and each time I am in awe of what an incredible performance he puts on and the intimacy he creates with the band and the crowd. If one day I have the chance to open for them, it truly would be a dream come true.
What is your creative process like?
I personally love to sit in my room in absolute silence, pull out my guitar and a journal and just start writing whatever comes to me. I find that journaling thoughts on a day to day and utilizing those notes for songs can be so much more authentic then sitting down and putting the pressure on yourself to write a song. I tend to write by myself rather than co writing because I think it allows me to say everything I want to say while canceling out the noise of all the other voices in the world. I’ll then bring mostly finished songs to the producers I work with and we will fine tune in the studio. I really do love the initial writing process being done by myself, but I also love allowing others to hear and critique my work, allowing for different paths to be taken within the song.
Do you enjoy recording and production?
Being in the studio is my favourite place to be. I love the fact that we as human beings can create something out of nothing. Though I don’t personally produce, I love giving my input on what should go where and adding different sounds to see what different directions songs can take. I love to record vocals and if you ask any of my producers they’ll tell you I am a perfectionist who will retake the most minimal backup vocals or ad libs just so I can get it perfect (and because I just love standing in front of the mic belting my heart out). If I could spend everyday in the studio making something, I would.
What is the best advice you have been given?
I think the best advice I have been given is to never give up on any music related dreams, no matter how big or bold they are because with the right amount of drive and hard work, they will eventually, in some capacity come true. I think a lot of artists get this advice but I think it rings true especially in times of doubt when you feel absolutely hopeless that you’ll make it in the industry. Being in this industry with so many people trying to make it and so many voices telling you that you can’t make it, understanding that no matter what, music will always be apart of my life and to never give up on it really helps me turn down the noise of people saying I can’t or should give up because its not worth it. At the end of the day I make music because I love to do it and with the right amount of hard work and passion for the craft, anything really is possible.
What is one message you would like to give your fans?
Something I have struggled with a lot in the past is truly being myself around others. Over the years I’ve learned a valuable lesson of being unapologetically you no matter how uncomfortable it makes other people. I think a lot of people fear the idea of being different and acting out of whatever the social or societal norms are, but at the end of the day we all only get one chance to live this life so I would say my advice to my fans, or honestly anyone in this world is to always be true to who you are as an individual because at the end of the day it really doesn’t matter what others think of you, it only matters what you think of you and once you can be authentically true to yourself, I guarantee your life will feel so much more fulfilling.
Do you have a cherished childhood teddy bear?
Yes, my cherished childhood teddy bear’s name is Crazy Pig Dog and I have 5 of them. When I was born, my parents best friend bought me this somewhat strange looking dog stuffed toy for the celebration of my birth. From the day I was born, Crazy Pig Dog and I were attached at the hip, I would take him everywhere with me. When my parents friend gifted him to me and my parents, my mom thought it looked like a pig and my dad thought it looked like a bear, hence the name Crazy Pig Dog, however we all call him Piggy for short. As time went on, Piggy became an absolute essential in my day to day life and anywhere we could find one we would buy it. To this day I have collected 5 Crazy Pig Dogs and they are all still an essential staple in my life.
As a kid were you ever afraid of monsters under the bed or in the closet?
I used to be so terrified of monsters in the closet as a kid that I would sleep with the lights on and the closet door fully open just so I knew there were no monsters in there. I would use my big imagination to craft in my head what these monsters would look like and would fully convince myself that they were coming to abduct me in my sleep. Although now that I think back on it, all the monsters I created in my head weren’t scary at all and in fact looked quite friendly, I’m really not sure why I thought these friendly looking monsters would come to abduct me, but to be fair I was scared of pretty much everything as a kid.
What makes you nostalgic?
I have always found that different random scents will bring me back to moments in my childhood. It’s interesting reflecting on it because I cant actually pin any of the scents but when I smell it I will be transported back to some significant moment in my life and ill start reliving all the memories associated with that smell
Would you be a valuable asset on a Pub Quiz team?
I would absolutely not be a valuable asset on a Pub Quiz team. I like to think I know a lot of random facts but when it really comes down to it and I play trivia games with my friends I always end up in last place.
What was your favourite childrens story?
My mom used to read me a book called “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein every night before bed as a child. The book is about a boy who befriends an apple tree and the boy and the tree are the best of friends when the boy is in his childhood years. As the boy grows up, he begins using the tree for his apples and doesn’t care for the tree like he did when he was young. Nearing the end of the story, the boy becomes greedy and cuts down the tree to use to make a boat for his own pleasure and doesn’t realize what this means for the relationship between him and the tree. This book taught me a lot about the relationship between giving and receiving. AS much as it is nice to receive from others, I think it is also important to give back and show the people in your life you care about them. I think this book has a wonderful message and I’ll still read it here and there to this day.
