With his signature blend of vulnerability and sonic depth, Egyptian-American indie folk artist Michael Isaak delivers a raw meditation on identity, fear, and self-preservation in his latest single, “Wrong Version of Me.” Now streaming on all major platforms, the track is Isaak at his most exposed—emotionally nuanced, musically layered, and lyrically unforgettable.

Written during a pivotal life change—his move from Los Angeles to New York—“Wrong Version of Me” documents the internal tug-of-war between who we are and who we become when the world demands transformation. “Last time I moved away, I became someone I couldn’t recognize,” Isaak shares. “This song is a promise to myself to stay as real and genuine as I can be.” That promise echoes throughout the song, especially in the aching chorus: “I never thought I’d be here, with the wrong person to believe, and I never wanted to leave from here, with the wrong version of me.” The song’s production elevates Isaak’s signature introspective sound with a fuller, more electrified atmosphere. Produced by longtime collaborators Charlie Hickey and Tyler Graham, the track features Isaak’s full band, including Matt TC Lucas on drums and Will Martinez on electric guitar, who experiments with “wacky pedals” to create a rich, immersive tone. The result is a tightrope walk between polished indie rock and Isaak’s confessional folk roots, an honest reflection of someone trying to hold onto themselves amid change.

As a self-written piece, “Wrong Version of Me” is unmistakably Isaak: honest, emotionally textured, and thoughtfully constructed. It follows the success of his 2024 EP Forever is a Scary Word, a six-track release that took nearly two years to complete and included Arabic instrumentation by Abanoub Samir, honoring Isaak’s cultural roots. The EP surpassed 100k streams on Spotify and led to Isaak’s biggest headline performance to date at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles.

Now based in New York, Isaak continues to carve a niche in the indie space, blending his folk and alternative influences with personal storytelling and a cross-cultural perspective. “Wrong Version of Me” is not just a song—it’s a moment of reckoning for anyone who’s felt themselves slipping away in pursuit of something new. It’s a reminder to stay grounded, stay real, and stay yourself. Stream “Wrong Version of Me,” and follow Michael Isaak on Instagram and TikTok
