After setting the benchmark with ‘Mastermind’, Róisín Murphy announces “Ten Miles High” as the first official single from her new album Take Her Up To Monto.
Perhaps surprisingly, “Ten Miles High” has a pop feel, reminiscent of “Overpowered,” a universal appeal. “I was scared of ‘Ten Miles High’ when I wrote it because it seemed to be really ‘Pop,’ and I was afraid it wouldn’t fit in on the record. But I got over myself,” admits Murphy.
Cementing the role of film-maker Murphy established during last year’s Mercury Prize nominated Hairless Toys, new single “Ten Miles High” arrives backed by a self-directed, self-styled, self-starring video. The clip is a kaleidoscopic celebration of London, a rectilinear trip shot through empty car parks, London’s rail network and various construction sites.
The visual themes “often emerge retrospectively.” About the “Ten Miles High” video she says, “It’s ‘reality’ but not as you know it. Akin to ‘realness’ a concept from the New York Gay Ball-Scene, it’s a kind of Drag, playing ‘real’ and ‘accepted’ stereotypes in another kind of environment entirely. Dressing ‘straight’ seamlessly but somehow doing it better and showing how strange and beautiful the ordinary can be if you just see it through a slightly different prism.”
Continuing the process of re-emergence that began with 2014’s Mi Senti EP and 2015’s critically acclaimed, Mercury Prize nominated album Hairless Toys, Take Her Up To Monto is an album which crackles with wild invention.
Murphy has confirmed the following festival dates this summer and will be the first artist ever to headline London’s Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in a landmark performance on August 15th.
