Los Angeles artist to watch, Wintur has released his forlorn indie-pop track “writer’s block,” which vibrates with tangible fatigue. Splendidly depressing: the single is a great fit for any moody and fall vibes playlists, managing to summon brain-altering memories despite its subdued instrumentation.
Wintur ruminates over “writer’s block,” a double entendre referring both to his inability to write and to the tragic hurdles in his love life. The hushed, whispery vocals culminate in a quiet realization: the young alt-pop artist has ended up in the same place over and over again, despite trying to quiet the deeper pains that come from heartbreaking breakups and the end of previously good experiences. He wants to move forward, but the memories and lingering emotions pull him back, turning reflection into creative confinement rather than soothing catharsis.
There’s something deeply tragic about this track’s quiet strength. As Wintur says, “I think I have writer’s block cause I want to change what I have to say,” he echoes a deep tiredness that permeates and bleeds into the recording. His vocals meander before the chorus, striking a tone that says, “you’ve exhausted me of my strength, and I have nothing left to say,” before hitting a crescendoing peak as he calls, “I’m tired of how it always ends.” The switch between his lower and higher register feels like a last stand against radically accepting a stalled pathway. That stand, however, falls away, leaving Wintur to echo as the song concludes, “the past keeps calling my name / but I won’t answer the same.”
Already gaining traction on TikTok from his previous 3 singles, the moody, alt-pop artist who has drawn comparison to artists like Sombr and ROLE MODEL, had fans eagerly awaiting the release of this latest track. In our opinion, it was well worth the wait! You can join Wintur’s fandom by following his Instagram @bywintur and TikTok @winturscott. Stream “writer’s block” below on Spotify.
